Postal History of Sheldon

Prior to 1803 the nearest postal facility required travel to Middlebury, VT. Josiah Hildreth submitted his first financial return on July 1, 1803 presenting the first evidence of a post master in Sheldon. He continued as post master until July 1, 1809 when Samuel Wead presented his report as evidence of his credentials. In each of these instances the exact location of the post office is not known. Postal service required limited time and resources and so the post office location, if only a wooden box holding mail, likely occupied a limited space in a store, hotel, tavern, or other public building.

On June 25, 1881, Delazon D. Wead  submitted the letter to the left to the US Post Office Department to fix the location of the post office at that time.

In part it reads “”The office is a distance of 5 rods from the Sheldon station of the St Johnsbury and Lake Champlain Railroad, on the west side of the railroad.”

This photo, prior to the 1932 fire, shows the post office next to the H H Mower Hardware Store on Bridge Street. The area became known as Post Office Square and served the village as a business, social, and commercial center until the fire of 1932.This location served as the post office during the term of Mamie Marsh from 1952 until the fire.

After H H Mower built a new store near the same location, Mrs. Marsh again served as post master there until 1952. In 1952 Helen Mercure assumed the position of post master and remained at this location until 1958 when she and her husband sold the store and moved the post office to Main Street.

The postal boxes to the left are the actual boxes first located in the H. H Mower Store in 1932 or 1933 when Mrs. Marsh was the head of the Sheldon Post office.

In 1958 Helen Mercure moved the post office to the location known as School 5 on Main Street where it remained until its closing.

Some of us may remember these artifacts as “Our Mail Box” in either location.  Some residents have choosen to “keep” their own mailbox at the museum location.  If you know your number stop by the museum when it is open and see if your old mailbox is still “available”

East Sheldon POST OFFICE FRANKLIN COUNTY, VERMONT

The East Sheldon Post Office opened in 1828 and remained open until 1901 with the exception of 1888 and 1889. Typical of rural post offices offering limited service as well as limited employment, the East Sheldon location served its patrons from stores and homes in the vicinity of the East Sheldon Road intersection with the Kittel Road. East Sheldon consisted during this time of about a dozen houses owned by people noted in other history articles such as the Stebbins, the Shuttlebeans, the Wells, and the Graves. Also noteworthy on the map are a tannery and the Union Church both well document in history.

North Sheldon POST OFFICE FRANKLIN COUNTY, VERMONT

North Sheldon sprang up on the St. Albans to Richford Highway as the half-way point along the Plank Road. Although primarily farm country, the map to the left clearly shows not only the Post Office but a school, a cheese factory, and a hotel. The Post Office began in 1854 under the leadership of Benjamin Fish Jr. At the end of the 18th century Daniel Fish cleared land at this locatio and built a home, a tavern, and other buildings. He along with a number of the Fish family members and Gallup family members maintained the post office with post masters changing frequently. The post office here was closed in 1965.
