The Grist Mill at Sheldon Creek

This image can be dated before 1894 by the absence of the Sheldon central school. The presence of  railroad tracks put it after 1876. A mixed train, with both a freight and passenger car, is visible behind the big store .  The large Holmes sawmill, which blocks the view of much of the covered bridge, sits just below  Jennison and Gallup’s store. The large white building left of center was Brigg Northrop’s gristmill: fairly new at the time. The familiar Northrop Grist mill is flanked by the fulling mill, or starch factory, of which only a few stones remain today.

This same building is seen here in more detail with the dam clearly showing. The Mill is one of the structures that withstood the fire but was torn down by the Northrup family shortly after a brief demonstration of the milling process for 20th century citizens to witness.
